Built as the headquarters for the Public Railroads Company (EFE), the present seat of the Ministry of Housing and Urbanism takes advantage of its position facing the Alameda and the existence of a pedestrian passageway on one side to present a unitary façade towards its front. Its composition is thoroughly symmetric, with typical elements of the modern aesthetics (abstract volumes, straight and curved lines, long balconies, round windows for the restrooms and repetitive openings for the offices) following the dictates of the streamline style, as used in those years in multiple buildings in Chile. The severity of its shape matches the institutional requirements of a company as relevant as EFE for the development of the country in the 30s, and as an agent of modernization on transport and industrialization in a country where the extension of the railroad meant directly the advance of progress.
